View from Below

Caiman viewed from underwater

I would never describe the many and varied photographs I'm sent as "ordinary", but this photograph struck me as decidedly out-of-the-ordinary. There's something otherworldly about the angle and lighting, placing us underwater staring up at a predator hanging motionless at the surface. We feel dwarfed by it, and rather vulnerable.

The photograph was submitted by Glenn Baker. Glenn told me the following: "These were taken July 4th at the Nature Center in Jekyll Island, Georgia USA. The two babies were not more then a foot in length. I'm just a beginner at nature photography and these were taken with a Mavica FD-75 digital camera by Sony with me trying to shoot through the glass of a tank with lots of water spots on the inside of it and lot of kids smudge marks. It was a bit of a challange but I thought they were most interesting."

All I can say Glenn is keep taking "interesting" photographs.

Would you like to enter your best photograph into the 2003 competition? Send me a photograph and I'll include the best here each month. The winner will be voted for in January 2004, and will receive an Ilford Cibachrome print prize to be awarded in early 2004. The only criteria for submitting a photograph is this: it must capture the attention.
