Tomistoma schlegelii

The maximum size for Tomistoma is reported to be around 5m (16 feet). This makes Tomistoma one of the largest species of crocodilians, although most animals will only reach about 70 to 80% of the maximum adult size. Males are always larger than females - females normally do not exceed 3 to 3.5m in length. This photograph is of one of the largest Tomistoma ever reported - judged to be between 16 and 17 feet, estimated against the length of the dugout canoe behind it. This photograph was taken on the Merang River in Sumatra.
