Alligator mississippiensis

Leucistic hatchling alligator swimming at the water surface. Lack of melanin pigment in the skin of animals is a relatively rare genetic trait. Such animals are at a disadvantage due to their light colour which lacks any real camouflage and is less suitable for absorbing both heat and UV rays. Therefore, albino alligators rarely survive under natural conditions. Leucistism differs from albinism in that pigment is not entirely absent - in most cases it is retained in the eyes.
