Adult floating at the water surface, showing a reduced profile so that only the head is visible to potential predators and prey. Adult alligators have virtually no natural predators in the US, although they were heading towards extinction only 20 years ago due to intense overhunting pressures from man. Protection of the species and habitats has contributed to a successful recovery.
