Costa Rica Alligator

American crocodile

This month's picture was taken by Guinn Hudon on a trip to Costa Rica. Of course it is not an alligator, but an American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) but crocodiles are often referred to as alligators in several South American countries (based on the derivation of the word alligator, which comes from the Spanish "el lagarto" which simply means "the lizard"). Guinn had the following to say about the picture:

"We just got back from a trip that included Costa Rica. As we were traveling from Puerto Limon to a plantation tour, this crocodilian was spotted across the river, about 150 yards away. As I only had a short telephoto installed, I was unable to get a really sharp picture."

Well, it might not be the sharpest picture but it's still a nice photograph of a basking crocodile.

Would you like to enter your best photograph as a potential Pic of the Month? Send it to me and I'll include the best here each month. Each year I run a competition where the best photograph each year is awarded a prize. To be in contention the picture must, above all, capture your attention.
