A Polite Request

Alligator gaping

This month's picture comes from Thomas Lynott while on a day trip from Tampa to the Everglades in Florida.

This alligator appeared at the side of the airboat they were riding in, and in alligator-speak seems to be politely asking for something. Crocodilians in general, like any wildlife, can become quite habituated to human visitors. The problem we often have is interpreting their signals - is this gator looking for a feed, or is it telling its observers to leave it alone? From the angle of its head and the shadow of the boat, it's probably looking for a meal.

Don't forget to check out the winner of the 2005 Pic of the Year competition!

Would you like to enter your best photograph as a potential Pic of the Month? Send it to me and I'll include the best here each month. Each year I run a competition where the best photograph each year is awarded an Ilfochrome print. This year there will be a special prize to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this website. The only criteria for submitting a photograph is this: it must capture the attention.
