Saltwater King

Saltwater Crocodile swimming

This month's picture comes from Prof. Gordon Grigg, University of Queensland. Gordon has been working on crocodiles for longer than I've been on planet Earth, so it's no surprise that he has an excellent eye for capturing the essence of crocodile. In this case we have the king of them all, a dominant male Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) on course with intent. Apart from being a great picture that grabs your attention, it really communicates a lot about the mastery of their domain. This picture has a dreamy, oil-painting look to it. It also shows the motion of the crocodile, and the scutes along its back have never looked better.

Don't forget to check out the winner of the 2005 Pic of the Year competition!

Would you like to enter your best photograph as a potential Pic of the Month? Send it to me and I'll include the best here each month. Each year I run a competition where the best photograph each year is awarded an Ilfochrome print. This year there will be a special prize to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this website. The only criteria for submitting a photograph is this: it must capture the attention.
