Alligator Ridge

Alligator ridge

This month's picture comes courtesy of Glen Olin, and features the perrennial favourite American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). What is particularly interesting about this photo is the angle and composition, which is quite striking. There is no doubt the photographer has captured the alligator's attention! And this is a large alligator.

The pronounced spine down the alligator's back is something Glen noticed. In some species this pronounced spine suggests large size, old age or even malnutrition, yet in other species the raised spine is quite normal and used as an identifying characteristic.

Would you like to enter your best photograph as a potential Pic of the Month? Send it to me and I'll include the best here each month. Each year I run a competition where the best photograph each year is awarded an Ilfochrome print. The only criteria for submitting a photograph is this: it must capture the attention.
