"Hatch, my Beauty"

Hatching crocodile

This month's picture was taken by Petr Myska of Viva Natura in Banderas Bay in Mexico. Petr accompanied Fabio Cupul during fieldwork on the American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) - a research project looking at population growth, habitat use and interactions between humans and crocodiles. They discovered this wild nest hatching during their visit - a fairly memorable event to witness in person.

What I like about this photograph in particular is the way it shows the hatchling beginning to uncoil itself from its tightly-packaged position when it was inside the egg. Crocodile hatchlings always look so optimistic and ready to take on the world.

This photograph is © Petr Myska and used here with permission. If you would like to use any of the photographs here, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the copyright holder.

Would you like to enter your best photograph as a potential Pic of the Month? Send it to me and I'll include the best here each month. Each year I run a competition where the best photograph each year is awarded a prize. To be in contention the picture must, above all, capture your attention.
