Heading for the Ark

Saltwater crocodiles

This month's picture was taken by Buck Salau, a ranger in Kakadu National Park, and it shows an interesting behaviour that you don't often see: crocodiles migrating. Here, these three saltwater crocodiles are taking a seasonal migration out of necessity - moving away from drying waterholes and heading back into the tidal river. Buck describes the photo like this:

"I took this photo at the freshwater saltwater tidal interface at the end of the dry season. The crocs are swimming according to rank with a 13 footer in the lead, with a 12 footer close behind and a 9 footer coming in last."

Would you like to enter your best photograph as a potential Pic of the Month? Send it to me and I'll include the best here each month. Each year I run a competition where the best photograph each year is awarded a prize. To be in contention the picture must, above all, capture your attention.
