"Alligator Alligator"

Yacare caiman

This month's picture was taken by Joe VanSambeek, showing a Jacaré or Yacare Caiman from Esteros del Ibera in eastern Argentina. You might wonder why the picture is entitled "Alligator Alligator" but that's simply a literal translation of the latin name Caiman yacare - "Caiman" is a Spanish term for "alligator" or any crocodilian, whereas "yacare" is a regional term that also means "alligator". Given that the name "alligator" is itself derived from the Spanish "el legarto" which means "the lizard" it can all get a little confusing. In reality Caiman yacare is a member of the Alligatoridae, and a close relative of the American alligator. So in reality, the latin name is really quite appropriate.

Would you like to enter your best photograph as a potential Pic of the Month? Send it to me and I'll include the best here each month. Each year I run a competition where the best photograph each year is awarded a prize. To be in contention the picture must, above all, capture your attention.
