MAIN MENU

Crocodylus niloticus

Sub-adult Nile crocodile lying on other, similarly-sized crocodiles at a crocodile farm in Mauritius - which is outside the present-day range of the Nile crocodile, but the original animals came from Madagascar. Ranching of crocodilians (i.e. harvesting eggs from the wild, and returning a percentage to the wild after a certain age) is attempting to save the heavily-depleted population in Madagascar. Other conservation measures are badly needed, however, such as providing locals with incentives to protect their crocodile populations and habitat.
